Staying with a local family is both exciting and rewarding. Host families provide the best insight into how an American family leads their life. This interaction with a family helps you communicate better, faster and allows you to pick up words and phrases used in daily situations. All families are English speaking and are happy to share all of Washington’s cultural and traditional aspects with you!
There is no typical homestay in Washington. Some homes are single standing homes, apartments or multifamily homes.Washington people come from all over the US and the world but all of them are American and call Washington home. Our host families reflect this diversity and include single people, couples, parents with children, and single-parent families. Each room is furnished with a bed, desk, closet and waste paper basket. You will also have access to a shared bathroom.
Description of local area
Washington, DC is a very diverse city with people from all over America and from all over the world. As well as being a world famous capital city, it is also one of the oldest cities in the US, and is home to many beautiful buildings and historic neighborhoods.
The DC area is a great place to learn about government and politics, of course, but it also has other attractions. There is also a buzzing music scene, trendy shopping districts, the picturesque areas of Georgetown and Alexandria, and food that ranges from chili hot dogs to Ethiopian cuisine. Sports fans can easily enjoy watching baseball, football, basketball, soccer and ice hockey. There are also renowned theatres and concert venues and prestigious university campuses.
The District of Columbia (DC) itself is not so big, with a population of about 600,000 residents. The metropolitan area (or ‘Metro Area’) which includes the nearest parts of the states of Virginia and Maryland, such as Arlington and Alexandria, is home to over 6 million people. All our homestays are located in areas that are easily accessible via public transport.
Downtown Vs Metro Area
Downtown homestays are no more than a 40-commute commute to the school and typically require only one form of public transport, either bus or metro. Metro Area homestays could be up to a one hour commute to the school and often require two forms of public transport such as bus and train.

Crystal Plaza Residence
Each apartment consists of two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a comfortable shared living area which features free wi-fi and cable TV. The bedrooms are either single or twin and there is 3 or 4 students per apartment. Both single rooms have a queen sized bed and twin bedrooms have two twin sized beds. All bedrooms have desks and plenty of storage space. There are two full sized bathrooms in each apartment, one for each bedroom.
The residence also features an outdoor swimming pool (open from late May till end of August), a Jacuzzi, an outdoor patio with BBQ area, an indoor gym with free yoga classes, a small library, a study area with computers and a printer, and there is even free tea and coffee available in the lounge. Card operated laundry facilities are available in the basement.
Description of local area
EC Washington, DC's student residence in Crystal City, VA, are just across the river from DC. Crystal City is a modern, urban neighborhood with many offices, shops and restaurants. The Crystal City Metro Station is only 5 minutes away and is accessible from the residence via an underground walkway. The Crystal City Shops shopping mall is right underneath the residence which is home to many designer and boutique retail stores, banks, delis, cafes and even a theatre. Crystal City Shops is accessible direct from the residence which is especially desirable in case of rain or snow or extreme heat! The heart of downtown Washington, DC is just 10 minutes away by metro and there is a large shopping mall at Pentagon City just 1 metro stop away. Old Town Alexandria is also nearby and is full of interesting history, architecture, shopping, and dining.
